Clusta: Plus +

July 28, 2009

As we saw with Zeitguised (“Peripetics,” below), 21st-century British design is doing remarkable work with Chaotic fragmentation and organic ordering – integrating the natural morphology of atmosphere, plant and animal (the “analog”) with the digital twitchiness of the mathematical, data-driven machine.

Clusta, a UK/LA design firm, created “Plus +” for a 2006 design expo in Birmingham, England (the heart of the 19th century’s Industrial Revolution), demonstrating what can be done with digital creativity (Clusta notes pointedly) when it doesn’t have to be “consumer-facing.” Music is “Wooden,” by Apparat, whose Myspace tagline is “Romanticism 3.0.” Be patient while it loads – it’s worth the wait. Intense, brooding, and beautiful in its glitchery, it’s a tsunami of the deeply convoluted emotions we don’t speak regarding our technological epoch, with so many signs lying just beyond the borders of intelligibility.
